‘Casting Call: The Audition’ was a performance that took place the night of the gallery opening. The documentation of the performance then lived on in the exhibition.

The stage is set, we are on a film production. In the parking lot, there are coolers, crafty (food), fans, and drinks. The attendees become the actors, usurping the roles written for them such as Assistant Director, Angry Citizen, Heart Broken Lover, Luna, and Mayor of Miami Dade County, among others. For some, their directions parallel what they would normally be doing at a gallery opening with actions like “drinking a beer” or “talking to a friend.” For others, the character demands a more absurdist approach like screaming into the fan every couple of minutes. Other roles, such as A Literal Angel or Voice of God, have a surrealist presence in the gallery.

Inside the gallery, a photo backdrop replaces the far wall of the space. A camera, light, and boom pole are decorated with different materials like ceramic, cardboard, paper mache, etc., and occupy the space along with realistic life sized cardboard cut-outs of the crew performing their roles as boom operator, cinematographer, and gaffer. Certain Actors will be asked to come inside and recite their roles in front of the camera.

At the height of the performance, the Producer announces that funding for the project has been cut, and everyone must leave.
